Orientation & Mobility ยป Paratransit ParatransitMany blind and visually impaired people are able to use the bus and subway to get around independently. However, in certain situations this might not be possible. For instance, if weather conditions or very difficult street crossings make reaching the bus stop impossible, then a visually impaired person might be eligible for Paratransit. Paratransit is a van service that covers three-quarters of a mile beyond the area covered by the regular bus and subway transit system. A person is only eligible for Paratransit if it is impossible for them to use the regular mass transit system and/or if they live within three-quarters of a mile of a bus route. For more information about mass transit, please call 716-855-7289 or visit the NFTA web site at www.nfta.com/metro/special_services.asp.
